Field liming

Lime application is an important part of maintaining soil health and crop productivity. The main purpose of liming fields is to improve soil acidity and provide an optimal growing environment for plants. In acidic soils, the uptake of essential nutrients is reduced, which affects both yield and plant health. Adding lime neutralizes soil acidity, improves soil structure, and enhances nutrient availability.

Precise and controlled composition: The composition and effect of lime are stable and predictable. Unlike ashes, whose composition can vary, lime has a consistent action, ensuring a steady and predictable result when raising soil pH levels.

Long-lasting effect: Lime reacts quickly in the soil, helping to neutralize acidity and improve soil condition. At the same time, liming provides a long-term positive effect that lasts for several years.

Optimal balance of trace elements: The calcium and magnesium contained in lime are essential for plant growth and ensure a healthy balance of soil micronutrients.

Environmental friendliness: The lime used for liming is a natural and pure product. Ensuring better yields: Liming results in healthier plants and higher crop yields. Regular liming helps maintain soil balance in the long term and ensures maximum productivity.

By choosing liming, you are investing in the long-term fertility of your fields and the health of the environment.

Customer experiences

Argo Kukk, CEO of Agri Haus OÜ, has over 25 years of experience as an agronomist and executive in various companies, including Tartu Agro AS, Viljatootja OÜ, and Ühinenud Farmid AS. His experience in field liming spans as long as his career. For the past ten years, he has been providing liming services, and for the past three years, through his own company, Agri Haus OÜ.

The delivery of lime today determines the location of farmers, as transportation costs make up half of the liming price,’ explains Kukk. He adds that the cooperation with Heidelberg Materials has been very smooth: ‘Everything works quickly and accurately – I am very satisfied with this side of things.

Kukk has recommended Kunda limestone to others, as, in his words, the product is ‘beautiful, uniform, and fine,’ ensuring good spreadability and excellent reactivity in the soil.

The role of lime fertilizers in Estonian soils is very important – sufficient calcium content in the soil ensures effective uptake of essential primary nutrients – NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) – which in turn guarantees a proper and high-quality yield. A soil pH above 6 is essential, especially for cereals such as barley and wheat, as well as for rapeseed, peas, and beans, and also for pastures, hayfields, and legume mixtures, which are an important feed for cattle.

He emphasizes that liming is one of the key factors why dairy production in Estonia exceeds 11,000 liters per cow, and why crop growers achieve stable yields even in challenging weather conditions. ‘If the soil pH is low, fertilizers are not absorbed, and crop cultivation becomes economically pointless,’ Kukk concludes.
